This practical how-to presentation will focus on best practices for 21st century public libraries. Practical information about changing services and use of public libraries and "doing more with less" will be addressed. Topics will include facilities, marketing, technology, collections, collaborations, staffing, and more. Presenters will encourage group discussion of the ideas presented.

MarcEdit Workshop ($15/$25)
MarcEdit is a free software program developed by Terry Reese of Oregon State University, used primarily to facilitate batch processing of records. Lisa Steinbarger of Notre Dame will demonstrate how MarcEdit can be used to edit record sets for loading into a library catalog. Functions include batch editing MARC records, character set conversions and record extractions and deletions. She will share the work flows that have been established at the University of Notre Dame Hesburgh Libraries, using MarcEdit to customize and correct vendor records before loading into ALEPH, their integrated library system. In addition, she will share their local process of reporting that creates summaries of the data in the record sets that allows them to analyze the records prior to modifying in MarcEdit.

No Stone Unturned in Consumer Health: Resources for Addressing the Issues and Challenges in Consumer Health and Patient Self Management ($15/$25)
In this session, librarians will learn how to recognize and overcome the challenges of providing useful information for consumer health and patient self-management. Issues included health literacy and health information literacy, readability and cognition factors that impact on an individual's ability to understand and use consumer health information. Participants will explore high quality consumer health information resources that are useful in public and academic library settings.
