Take Thou Authority
Authority Control is one of the least understood processes undertaken by the technical services side of the library. Yet the demand for a high quality, value added database (that’s the catalog to you and me!) is one of the first on many administrator’s lists when it comes to customer satisfaction. It isn’t cheap and it isn’t easy, but we will look at ways to campaign for the right to authority control, achieve some measure of control without busting the budget (and increasing the load on local mental health professionals), and tools than can help the process.

Improving the Efficiency of Library Operations
Benjamin Franklin said a ‘penny saved is a penny earned’ and, at a time when libraries are struggling for every penny we can get, there is ample evidence that we could earn plenty by simply improving the efficiency of our operations and using the money we do have more effectively. For example, did you know that – on average -- it costs more than twice as much to operate a library than it does a bookstore of the same size, or that the Singapore National Library has a branch where they do 100% self-checkout, or that a number of libraries are experimenting with reducing the cost of reference with centralized call centers? Come hear more about these and lots of other ideas – both large and small – for reducing the cost and improving the efficiency of library operations on Thursday, March 24, 2005 …. (time, location, etc). Presenter, Steve Coffman, Vice President of Business Development, LSSI, librarian, and author of “What If You Ran Your Library Like a Bookstore?” and other articles on all aspects of library operations.
