HAIL

Hoosiers and Information Literacy

Academic Libraries of Indiana invites all librarians, educators, and other interested parties to join HAIL!

The mission of the Academic Libraries of Indiana Hoosiers and Information Literacy Project (HAIL) is to actively promote information literacy efforts beginning with Indiana's youngest citizens and continuing through adulthood to foster in Hoosiers skills for finding the information they need and the ability to use that information effectively while building a knowledge base that will serve them throughout their lives.

To stay informed about HAIL, subscribe to ALI-HAIL-L. To join HAIL, contact Lisa Jarrell at ljjarrell@bsu.edu.

The Hoosiers and Information Literacy (HAIL) Project is proud to announce a new guide to professional development resources and opportunities, centered around information literacy issues, for librarians throughout Indiana: http://guides.library.ipfw.edu/hailprofdev

At a time when financial support for professional development is dwindling, this guide, built by members of the HAIL Professional Development Working Group, highlights tools and resources librarians can use to build their skills and better serve their communities, right at their own desks. Whether your library work involves helping people navigate consumer health information, working with local businesses to find and recruit qualified employees, teaching students to find reliable information on the internet, or any other activity where your users are finding, evaluating, and using information, this guide has resources that will help you do it better.

HAIL Working Groups

In July 2011, ALI's Information Literacy Committee hosted an Information Literacy Summit so that representatives of major library organizations in Indiana could share the state of information literacy in their area of specialization. In response to issues raised at the Summit, workgroups were formed to carry out relevant projects in support of HAIL's mission.

Outreach Working Group

Facilitator, TBA. Contact Lisa Jarrell at ljjarrell@bsu.edu for more information.

The Outreach Working Group for the HAIL Project will focus on working with stakeholders outside of libraries (except for teacher education) to develop plans to implement HAIL.

PR/Marketing Working Group

Facilitator, TBA. Contact Lisa Jarrell at ljjarrell@bsu.edu for more information.

The PR/Marketing Working Group for the HAIL Project will focus on creating tools for Indiana libraries and librarians to market their information literacy efforts and raise awareness of information literacy in their communities through HAIL efforts and initiatives.

Professional Development Working Group

Facilitator, Christina Wray (ccwray@indiana.edu)

The Professional Development Working Group for the HAIL Project will focus efforts on librarians and library personnel to increase their knowledge and comfort level in delivering information literacy education to their stakeholders.

Teacher Education Working Group

Facilitator, Jen Traore (jtraore1@ivytech.edu) or Brenda Yates-Habich (bhabich@bsu.edu)

The Teacher Education Working Group for the HAIL Project will focus on promoting information literacy components in Common Core Standards, including media specialists as a resource for implementation, to K-12 teachers and administrators.

Dual Credit Working Group

Facilitator, Shannon Johnson (johnsons@ipfw.edu)

This group will focus on looking at the current trend towards dual-credit programs (college credits being offered in the high schools) and the implications for libraries and information literacy education in the state. Plans for this group are still forming as we add new members, but will likely include a survey of current dual-credit programs and IL instruction and looking into possible ways for librarians across the field (school, academic, and public) to work together in supporting/reaching this unique group of students. Meetings for this group are handled through telephone conferencing and the schedule is flexible.

To join or learn more about a particular HAIL workgroup, please contact the group facilitator.
