Please Welcome ILF's New Executive Director, Susan Akers!

sa

On behalf of the ILF Board of Directors, I am pleased to announce that Ms. Susan Akers has been hired as ILF’s new Executive Director. Susan comes to us from Ball State University Libraries where she has served as Marketing Communications Manager at Ball State University Libraries since 2003. She has a master’s degree in public relations and a bachelor’s degree in journalism (minor in business) from Ball State University. She has worked in the non-profit sector as Coordinator/Fundraiser for the Little 500 Festival, Program Manager for Big Brothers/Big Sisters and Media Relations Coordinator for the Anderson Fine Arts Center, in the public library and academic library sectors as Manager of Community Relations for the Anderson Public Library. Susan was also the Marketing Communications Manager for the Ball State University Libraries, and in the education sector as Adjunct Professor at Ivy Tech Community College, East Central Indiana.

For 13 years, Susan has promoted the services of libraries and librarians, both public and academic. She specializes in non-profit management, strategic planning, communications and brand management. Susan says she still gets a magical feeling when she walks into a library. She and her husband live in Pendleton, Indiana and have two daughters.

Susan will begin her tenure as ILF Executive Director on July 16, 2009. She is eager to get to know ILF members and work with them on issues facing ILF and Indiana libraries. As one of her references wrote, “She has a great heart for libraries and a wonderful appreciation for the library profession. She is not the least bit afraid of rolling up her sleeves and taking on any work that needs to be done.”

Please join me in welcoming Susan to ILF.

Cheryl Truesdell, ILF President

ALA Chicago Bus Trip!

The Indiana Library Federation is pleased to announce that it will be sponsoring a motor coach from Indianapolis to visit the ALA Exhibit Show on Saturday, July 11th, 2009 in Chicago! Exhibit Hours are scheduled from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Departure time from Indianapolis (Indiana Library Federation office) is still being determined as the bus will make one stop in Lafayette on the way to Chicago at a location to be determined, but our goal is to get you to Chicago in time for the Exhibits opening at 9:00 a.m. Further details as to specific times will be forwarded to you closer to the conference.

The trip will be operated on a cost recovery basis – so we’ll need to have enough registrations to cover our costs to make the trip a go. Credit cards will not be charged and checks will not be cashed until two weeks prior to the trip.

An exciting feature for this year’s conference is that you can get your exhibits pass for free! Just visit this link http://registration.experient-inc.com/ShowALA092/defaultexhguest.aspx to register for your complimentary exhibits pass. You will need to be sponsored by a vendor who is exhibiting at ALA, so if your company works or does business with any ALA vendors ask your rep if they would be willing to sponsor you. If you are unable to secure a free pass, one may be purchased onsite.

Please fill out the registration form and return it to the ILF office. We look forward to seeing you in July!

Dear Indiana Library Trustees and Directors,

Raising the bar could be the theme for public library leaders in 2009

119 library trustees and directors met at eight sites all across the state on March 16 for the first Indiana Library Champions Town Hall meeting.

152 attended the second ILC Town Hall meetings at nine sites on April 13.

The topic this month is the proposed new standards for public library services to Indiana citizens.

The revision of these standards is important to the health and vitality of public libraries as we face current economic challenges and prepare for the future.

This is an urgent reminder that this is a WORK IN PROGRESS and your input is needed:

1) Find the materials from the Town Hall meeting on the Public Library Standards page of WebJunction Indiana http://in.webjunction.org/in/plstandards

2)
Complete “homework assignments” by May 1 and send them to the Indiana State Library (see the website!)

A video stream of the presentation by the Indiana State Library and the input from the 9 locations across the state will be available early next week.

We’ve only just begun
