The Young Hoosier Book Award Committee is composed of members of both school and public librarians. Each year, committee members select 20 nominees for each category (Picture Book, Intermediate, Middle Grades) from titles suggested by teachers, students, parents, public librarians, and media specialists. Books must meet the following guidelines to be eligible for consideration:

  • Author or Illustrator can have multiple titles on a sub-committee's reading list, but will be restricted to one work on the final YHBA nominee list in any particular year. However, author may have a nominee on more than one sub-committee list in any particular year.
  • Author of a nominated book must be living at the time of the nominee selection.
  • The book must have been published within the last five (5) years.
  • The book must be in print at the time of selection.
  • The book cannot be a previous YHBA nominee, but may be on a prior reading list.
  • The book cannot be a Caldecott or Newbery Medal winner at the time the committee is making final selections.  Honor books from either of these award categories are acceptable.
