Bradley, Kimberly Brubaker. For Freedom: The Story of a French Spy.  A novel based on the true story of Suzanne David Hall, a teenager who worked as a spy for the French Resistance while training to become an opera singer in Nazi-occupied France.  Word

 

Bruchac, JosephThe Warriors. Jake Forest, a young teenager, leaves the Iroquois reservation where he was raised to live with his mother, a lawyer, in Maryland and attend a prestigious private school. Word

Cooney, Caroline BCode Orange.  While conducting research for a school paper on smallpox, Mitty fears he has accidentally infected himself and all of New York City with the disease. Word

Cooper, Michael L Dust to Eat: Drought and Depression in the 1930's. This book includes information on the Great Depression and the Roosevelt administration's response to it.  It also puts a human face on the overwhelming tragedy of the Dust Bowl. Word

Creech, SharonHeartbeat.  Twelve-year-old Annie ponders the rhythms of life the year that her mother becomes pregnant, her grandfather begins faltering, and her best friend becomes distant. Word

Curry, Jane LouiseThe Black Canary.  The child of two musicians, twelve-year-old James, has no interest in music until he discovers a portal to 17th Century London in his uncle's basement.  Word

DeFelice, Cynthia. The Missing Manatee. While coping with his parents' separation, eleven-year-old Skeet spends spring break on a Florida river where he finds a manatee shot to death. Word

 

Giff, Patricia Reilly. A House of Tailors. When thirteen-year-old Dina emigrates from Germany to America in 1871, her only wish is to return home as soon as possible. Word

 

 

 

 

Hahn, Mary Downing. The Old Willis Place: A Ghost Story. Twelve-year-old Diana ignores her brother's warnings and befriends the daughter of the new caretaker and sets in motion events that lead to the release of the spirit of an evil woman. Word

 

 

 

Hale, Marian. The Truth About Sparrows. Twelve-year-old Sadie promises that she will always be Wilma's best friend when their families leave drought-stricken Missouri in1933.  However, once in Texas, Sadie learns that she must make new friends, too.  Word

 

 

 

 

Hiaasen, Carl Flush. When their father is jailed for sinking a river boat, Noah and his younger sister, Abbey, must prove that the owner of the floating casino is emptying raw sewage into protected waters in the Florida Keys.  Word

 

 

Immel, Mary Blair. Captured! A Boy Trapped in the Civil War.  Based on a true story, this novel tells the story of fourteen-year-old Johnny Ables who is pressed into service in the Confederate army and forced to participate in a major Civil War battle. Word

 

 

 

 

Lowry, Lois. Messenger. Matty, a member of a utopian community that values honesty, conceals an emerging healing power that he cannot explain or understand.  Word

 

 

Lupika, Mike. Travel Team. Danny, a basketball fanatic, is smart, talented, fast, dedicated and short. When he fails to to make the seventh grade basketball travel team, he also fails to follow in the footsteps of his legendary father, Richie Walker, who led his twelve-year-old team to win the nationals. Smith, D. J.  The Boys of San Joaquin. In a small California town in 1951, twelve-year-old Paolo and his cousin, Billy, get caught up in the search for money missing from the church collection plate.  Word

 

 

Wardlaw, Lee. 101 Ways to Bug Your Teacher. "Sneeze" attempts to thwart his parents' plan to have him skip the eighth grade. Word

 

 

 

Weeks, Sarah. So B. It. After living her entire life with her handicapped mother and agoraphobic neighbor, twelve-year-old Heidi sets out for New York to find out who she is. Word

 

 

 

Whiteman, Dorit Bader. Lonek's Journey: The True Story of a Boy's Escape to Freedom. When Lonek was eleven, his family tried to evade capture by the Nazis by going in to hiding.  However, his family was discovered and deported to Siberia. Word

 

 

Wiles, Deborah.  Each Little Bird That Sings. Ten-year-old Comfort Snowberger prides herself in taking death in stride until the loss of her Great-Great-Aunt Florentine. Word
