Cannon, Janell. Pinduli. Pinduli, a young striped hyena, is hurt by the unkind words of Dog, Lion, and Zebra, but her clever trick promotes her clan's survival and spreads harmony throughout the savannah.  Includes facts about hyenas and other animals of the African savanna. word

Connor, Leslie. Miss Bridie Chose a Shovel. Miss Bridie immigrates to America in 1856 and chooses to bring a shovel on her journey. This proves a wise and useful choice throughout her life. word

Cronin, Doreen. Diary of a Spider. A young spider discovers that there is a lot to learn about being a spider, including how to spin webs and avoid vacuum cleaners. word

Dodds, Dayle Ann. Minnie's Diner: A Multiplying Menu. A rhyming tale of five boys and their father who forget about their chores on the farm to enjoy Minnie's good cooking down at the diner.  word

 

Hest, Amy. Mr. George Baker. Harry sits on the porch with Mr. George Baker, an African American who is one hundred years old but can still dance and play the drums, waiting for the school bus that will take them both to the class where they are learning to read. word

Hoberman, Mary Ann. You Read to Me, I'll Read to You: Very Short Mother Goose Tales To Read Together. A collection of nursery rhymes in a new format.  Written in two voices, the rhymes are to be read by child and adult or two children. word

Hopkinson, Deborah. Apples to Oregon. A pioneer father moves his family and his beloved fruit trees across the country to Oregon.  Based loosely on the life of Henderson Luelling. word

 

Kasza, Keiko. The Dog Who Cried Wolf.  Tired of being a house pet, Moka moves to the mountains to become a wolf but soon misses the comforts of home. word

Lester, Helen. Hurty Feelings. It looks like trouble when Fragility, a hippopotamus whose feelings are easily hurt, meets Rudy, a rude elephant, on the soccer field. word

Long, Melinda. How I Became a Pirate. Jeremy Jacob joins Braid Beard and his pirate crew and finds out about pirate language, pirate manners and other aspects of pirate life. word

 

Nevious, Carol. Karate Hour. Rhyming text allows readers to view the exuberance of an hour-long karate class.  Readers will experience the emotion and excitement of this sport.  A nonfiction section is included at the end of the book for those readers who would like to learn more about karate. word

Orloff, Karen Kaufman. I Wanna Iguana. Alex and his mother write notes back and forth in which Alex is trying to convince his mother to allow him to have his friend's baby iguana as his own pet. word

 

Pearson, Susan. Who Swallowed Harold? And Other Poems About Pets. Who swallowed Harold?  Just who is Harold?  Find out about Harold and lot of other pets in this funny poetry book! word

 

Salley, Coleen. Why Epossumondas Has No Hair On His Tail. Little Epossumondas wonders why his tail is bare, so his Mama tells him the story about how great, great, grandpa lost the hair on his tail. word

Sklansky, Amy E.  Where Do Chicks Come From? Describes what happens day-to-day for the three weeks from the time a hen lays an egg until the baby chick hatches. word

Slaymaker, Melissa Eskridge.  Bottle Houses: The Creative World of Grandma Prisbey.  An introduction to the world of folk artist Grandma Prisbrey.  At the age 60, Grandma Prisbrey decided to retire from living on the road with her family.  Too poor to buy a house, she decided to build one out of things she found at the dump. word

Stanley, Diane. The Giant and the Beanstalk.   In this version of the traditional tale, a young giant chases Jack down the beanstalk to rescue his beloved hen and meets other Jacks from various nursery rhymes along the way. word

 

Wilson, Karma.  Never, Ever Shout in a Zoo.  A little girl's shout at the zoo sets off a series of events that results in the animals escaping and the visitors ending up in a cage. word

Woodson, Jacqueline.  Coming On Home Soon.  Staying with Grandma while Mama takes a job in Chicago during World War II, Ada Ruth misses her mother who loves her more than rain and snow. word

 

Yang, Belle.  Hannah Is My Name.  A young Chinese girl and her parents immigrate to the United States and try their best to assimilate into their San Francisco neighborhood while anxiously awaiting the arrival of their green cards. word
