About the Poll

Conducted in April 2026, the ILF Polling Project gathered responses from 800 Indiana residents representing communities across the state. The survey explored public attitudes regarding libraries, intellectual freedom, library funding, book access, school librarians, community services, and the value libraries bring to Indiana communities.

The findings serve as an important resource for library leaders, trustees, educators, advocates, elected officials, and community stakeholders seeking to better understand how Hoosiers view libraries and the services they provide.

A Representative View of Indiana

Before exploring the findings, it is important to understand who participated in the survey. Responses came from Hoosiers across rural, suburban, and urban communities, representing multiple generations, political affiliations, educational backgrounds, and religious perspectives.

This diverse sample helps ensure the survey reflects a broad cross-section of Indiana residents and provides meaningful insight into how Hoosiers think about libraries, information access, education, and community services.
