Hoosier Intellectual Freedom Fund

An ILF Awards & Honors Committee Initiative

Indiana Library Federation members may apply to access funds from the Hoosier Intellectual Freedom Fund to support legal defense in matters involving intellectual freedom, including issues related to book challenges, collection development, and access to information.

Funds may be used to cover legal representation and court-related expenses associated with qualifying intellectual freedom cases.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must:

• Be an ILF Personal Member, Institutional Member, or Trustee Member.
• Be named as a principal litigant in a lawsuit filed in an Indiana court.
• Be involved in a legal matter pertaining to intellectual freedom.

Submission Process

Applications are submitted through the online application form. A link to the form may also be requested from the ILF office.

Upon receipt, the ILF Executive Committee will convene a special review committee. This committee must include ILF Executive Leadership and should include representatives from school, public, academic, and law libraries.

Applications should include:

• An outline of the legal case
• Documentation of expenses
• Contact information for legal representation

Fund Availability

Funding requests are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Because legal expenses can vary significantly depending on the nature and scope of the matter, no fixed funding cap has been established.

Awards are determined based on demonstrated need, available resources, and the specific circumstances of each request.
